On Wednesday, President Trump promised a $5,000 dividend for every American citizen following the midterm elections, provided that Republicans maintain their majorities in both the House and Senate. Speaking in Dallas at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention, Trump made the pitch nearly an hour into his address as he attempts to energize GOP voters facing tough political challenges ahead of November. While he provided no specifics on the implementation of the proposed ‘Trump Dividends’ or whether he would seek congressional authorization, he has previously suggested similar ideas, such as tariff-funded $2,000 checks. Broad-based financial relief to U.S. households has precedent from pandemic-era stimulus in 2020 and 2021, though economists have noted that such programs risk driving up inflation. During his speech, Trump compared the proposed checks to his congressional-approved Trump Account child investment funds and last year’s military ‘warrior dividend’ bonuses.
