The chief executive of artificial intelligence company Anthropic issued a fresh appeal on September 12, 2026, urging the AI industry to slow down its rapid pace of development. CEO Dario Amodei released a three-part plan and published an essay titled We Must Pace the Frontier, stating that his company would unilaterally commit to the initial step. Under this proposal, Anthropic intends to provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to its systems to verify safety compliance, report incidents, and assess model alignment during training. Amodei noted that over preceding months, he became convinced that properly addressing the risks of advanced systems requires greater prudence and pacing the rate of capability advancement so risk prevention can keep up. He stated that progress will still appear fast and that the industry must make wise use of any time gained. The warning follows statements from former researchers who raised concerns regarding the speed of recursive self-improvement and safety protocols across leading tech firms. Other prominent industry figures, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, also weighed in on the need to manage the frontier of AI advancement carefully.
