Criticism of a three-year threshold repayment freeze has prompted the UK government to update its guidance for university students taking out student loans, the government has said. The revised guidance will explicitly warn borrowers that the terms and conditions of loans could be changed so students are better informed about what they are signing up to.
In July, a report by MPs concluded that promotional materials — including slideshows that compared student loan repayments to the cost of a mobile phone contract and YouTube videos — did not make clear that conditions could be altered and amounted to mis-selling by the government.
The government said it will amend its information for prospective borrowers to ensure those risks are set out more clearly when students consider taking out loans.
