Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Friday urged the Trump administration to finalize a proposed rule that would limit sales of kratom, a plant with opioid-like properties that is available over the counter.
In a social media post, Grassley wrote: “All Kratom is deadly it should NOT be sold at gas stations/vape stores/ANYWHERE Admin needs 2 put out final 7OH rule NOW…”
Grassley’s comment referenced a proposed rule known as the 7-OH rule, which relates to the regulation of kratom products that contain 7-hydroxymitragynine, a compound linked to opioid-like effects.
Advocates for stricter regulation say kratom can pose serious health risks, while proponents argue it can be used as an alternative for managing pain or withdrawal symptoms. Lawmakers and federal agencies have debated how to classify and control kratom for several years.
The Hill reported Grassley’s call amid ongoing discussions within the federal government about whether and how to restrict kratom sales and distribution.
