The most influential social media account driving the Alberta separatism movement, Rise of Alberta, shares direct ties with independence leader and lawyer Keith Wilson, according to a recent analysis. Launched in the spring of 2025, the anonymous X account has amassed nearly 100,000 followers by posting AI-generated memes, separatist talking points, and merchandise ads. Researchers from the Media Ecosystem Observatory note that the account single-handedly drives nearly 12 percent of all online engagement regarding Alberta independence, dwarfing other accounts in the digital space. While the person operating the account has remained anonymous and declined interview requests, investigative findings reveal that the same email address was used to register the Rise of Alberta website, its merchandise store, and several websites associated with Keith Wilson and the Alberta Transition Council. Archived website data also listed the same mailing address as Wilson’s law firm. When questioned, Wilson confirmed he has a professional relationship with the account runner, who acts as a web designer and webmaster for his projects. However, Wilson maintained that he has no control over the content posted by Rise of Alberta and is not personally behind the account, though he does assist by promoting its merchandise on his YouTube channel and having return packages sent to his law office. Experts point out that the heavy reliance on an anonymous, highly influential account poses a challenge for democratic scrutiny, as the movement organizes largely outside traditional party politics. Wilson defended the creator’s anonymity, citing the personal and professional risks associated with advocating for separatism publicly in Alberta.
