Plaid Cymru leader and Welsh first minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to deliver a “new deal” on devolution, telling party members his government has a “clear mandate” to secure greater powers from Westminster.
Speaking in Llandudno during his first keynote address to a Plaid Cymru annual conference since becoming first minister, ap Iorwerth said he had formally asked the prime minister to “put Wales on equal footing with Scotland as bare minimum”.
The appeal came as he set out his administration’s case for expanding devolved responsibilities, stressing the need for a negotiated settlement with Downing Street to transfer additional powers to the Welsh government.
Ap Iorwerth’s speech to party members marked a high-profile moment early in his tenure, signalling Plaid Cymru’s priorities and its push for a strengthened devolution settlement.
