The head of the Tennessee prison system is stepping down following the botched execution of Christa Pike earlier this week, Governor Bill Lee announced on Saturday. Lee stated that Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada will leave his post this month, though he provided no further details. Strada stated that he believes the department executed its duties according to established guidelines, but concluded that resigning serves the best interests of state residents while an independent review ordered by Lee moves forward. Strada added that he views the investigation as appropriate and necessary, and intends to assist in uncovering what transpired. Pike was scheduled for execution by lethal injection on Wednesday, but the procedure failed twice. Her attorneys reported on Friday that Pike remains unconscious, intubated, and on a ventilator at a Nashville-area hospital with severe injuries to both arms. Medical personnel are actively working to clear pentobarbital from her system. In response to the incident, Governor Lee has suspended all remaining executions scheduled in Tennessee for the remainder of the year. Legal representatives for Pike filed a court motion asking for an order compelling the corrections department to preserve all evidence tied to the botched attempt. According to her lawyers, the execution team appeared unaware that the intravenous lines were improperly positioned or that her veins had blown, causing the pentobarbital to leak into surrounding tissue. The Tennessee Department of Correction maintained that it strictly followed every phase of the state’s approved legal execution protocol. Pike was scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee since the nineteenth century after the Supreme Court cleared the way for the sentence. She was condemned for the 1995 murder of former classmate Colleen Slemmer. Court documents show that Pike and Slemmer attended the Job Corps Center in Knoxville, where an eighteen-year-old Pike tortured and killed nineteen-year-old Slemmer over remarks regarding Pike’s relationship. Pike is currently fifty years old. Strada had originally been appointed commissioner by Governor Lee in January 2023.
