Crypto King Aiden Pleterski Fraud Trial Starts in Toronto

The criminal trial for self-described Crypto King Aiden Pleterski officially begins Tuesday morning in Toronto at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Pleterski, 27, entered a not-guilty plea on Monday to charges of money laundering and fraud exceeding $5,000 just ahead of the jury selection process. A jury consisting of seven men and seven women was successfully seated Monday afternoon following proceedings overseen by Justice Shaun Nakatsuru. Justice Nakatsuru opted to select 14 jurors because the trial is scheduled to run for approximately one month, though only 12 members of the jury will ultimately deliberate at the conclusion of the case. Pleterski’s arrest took place in May 2024 following an extensive joint investigation conducted by the Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Securities Commission, which authorities named Project Swan. According to police allegations, Pleterski orchestrated a massive multimillion-dollar fraud operation utilizing capital collected from various investors between July 2020 and late July 2022. The case gained widespread public attention starting in the summer of 2022, when frustrated investors forced Pleterski into bankruptcy in an effort to recover millions of dollars handed over for cryptocurrency and foreign exchange investments. Over the course of the upcoming month-long trial, Crown prosecutors are anticipated to present testimony from more than a dozen witnesses as the legal proceedings unfold in Toronto.
