Legal procedures are underway to establish the mechanism, executing agency, and distribution process for confiscating the assets of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other convicts to compensate the families of martyrs, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam said on Monday.
The development follows the ICT’s November 17, 2025 ruling, in which a bench led by Tribunal Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity linked to the July killings. The tribunal ordered the confiscation of their assets and directed the government to provide a “considerable amount of compensation” to the families of the victims. Similar confiscation directives have been issued in other cases, including one against former Member of Parliament Saiful Islam over the killing and burning of six bodies in Ashulia.
Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam told reporters that while provisions for property confiscation and victim compensation exist within tribunal rules and general law, he has requested specific guidelines from the tribunal’s judges. He noted that once finalized, the framework will apply with retrospective effect to previously delivered verdicts, adding that there are no legal obstacles to doing so.
Assets Declared in 2024 Election Affidavit
The confiscation process has brought scrutiny to properties registered in Hasina’s name. According to the asset declaration submitted for the 12th parliamentary election in 2024, where she contested the Gopalganj-3 constituency in a vote widely referred to as a “dummy election,” the Awami League president reported total movable and immovable assets worth Tk 4.34 crore (Tk 43.4 million).
Her declared financial and movable assets included:
- Tk 28,500 in cash.
- Approximately Tk 2.39 crore (Tk 23.9 million) in bank and financial institution deposits.
- Fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) worth Tk 55 lakh (Tk 5.5 million) and savings certificates worth Tk 25 lakh (Tk 2.5 million).
- Three motor vehicles, comprising two valued at Tk 47.5 lakh (Tk 4.75 million) and one received as a gift with no declared monetary value.
- Gold and other precious metals valued at Tk 13.25 lakh (approximately Tk 1.33 million).
- Furniture valued at Tk 7.40 lakh (Tk 740,000).
Real Estate and Disputed Properties
In her 2024 submission, Hasina declared ownership of 15.3 bighas of agricultural land across Tungipara, Gopalganj Sadar, Gazipur, and Rangpur, with purchased segments valued at Tk 6.78 lakh (Tk 678,000). She also declared a partially owned 6.10-decimal plot featuring a three-storey building in Tungipara, Gopalganj, with an acquisition value of Tk 5 lakh, alongside a plot in Dhaka’s Purbachal valued at Tk 34.76 lakh (approximately Tk 3.48 million).
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has previously challenged Hasina’s historical asset declarations. During a briefing on May 22, the ACC stated that in her 2008 ninth parliamentary election affidavit, Hasina reported owning 6.50 acres of land valued at Tk 1.75 lakh (Tk 175,000), whereas an inquiry revealed she held over 28 acres and 41 decimals of immovable property at the time. The ACC subsequently sought action from the Election Commission.
The ACC has also initiated cases over the allotment of 60 kathas of land in Purbachal, alleging abuse of power. Under the allocation, 10-katha plots were granted individually to Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed, her daughter Saima Wazed, her sister Sheikh Rehana (Rehana Siddiq), her nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and her niece Azmina Siddiq (Rupanti).
Status of Family Residences
Land office records show that prominent family properties are held under trusts or family members’ names rather than Hasina’s personal title:
- 32 Dhanmondi: The historic residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is owned by the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust.
- Sudha Sadan: The private Dhanmondi residence is registered under the names of Sajeeb Wazed and Saima Wazed.
- Gazipur Country House: A 297-decimal (9 bighas) estate in Telirchala, Mouchak, located east of the Bangladesh Scouts Training Centre along the Dhaka-Tangail Highway, was transferred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman around 1970. Inherited by Hasina and Rehana, portions were later transferred to their children: Sajeeb Wazed, Saima Wazed, Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and Azmina Siddiq.
