Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stated that her cousin and party Presidium member, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, will perform the duties of the Awami League president during her absence.
In an interview with the Kolkata-based outlet The Wall published on September 6, Hasina explained that Selim is currently the most senior member of the Awami League Presidium, placing him in line to take over the presidential responsibilities.
During the interview, Hasina also dismissed prospects of her sister, Sheikh Rehana, stepping into active politics, noting that Rehana is not directly involved in political matters.
Hasina has served as the president of the Awami League since February 16, 1981. She fled to India on August 5, 2024, after a mass uprising removed her and her party from power.
Hasina has been living in New Delhi since fleeing the country. The Bangladesh government has continued to demand her extradition from India after the International Crimes Tribunal convicted her of crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 uprising and sentenced her to death in November 2025.
