India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that there is no fresh update concerning whether Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will participate in the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled in New Delhi. Speaking during the weekly media briefing on Tuesday, Jaiswal addressed inquiries regarding head of state confirmations and whether Dhaka had officially communicated the Bangladesh prime minister’s attendance. He noted he had no new details regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joining the outreach session in his capacity as the chair of BIMSTEC, nor did he list participating leaders for the weekend summit. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously extended an invitation to Tarique Rahman following bilateral discussions and an earlier invitation for an official visit earlier in February. Although diplomatic talks regarding a potential trip continued, final scheduling remains unconfirmed, influenced by recent political tensions surrounding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s virtual appearance at a New Delhi event. Meanwhile, Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir previously suggested a visit before the UN General Assembly session was unlikely. Additionally, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi held a courtesy meeting with Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Dhaka on Tuesday to discuss broader bilateral relations and cooperative engagement.
