Trump Administration Pushes AI Integration in Healthcare

The Trump administration is accelerating efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into medical care across the United States. Federal projects are rolling out AI agents designed to offer therapy, diagnose conditions, and prescribe treatments to patients, marking a major shift in national health policy.

This multifront initiative, driven by the Department of Health and Human Services, has sparked concerns among some officials. Insiders note that the transition is moving too rapidly, pointing to a lack of sufficient evidence regarding the safety and clinical effectiveness of these tools. Critics have also raised alarms about the growing influence of Silicon Valley venture capitalists, who historically have had little involvement in federal health policy.

Billionaire venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has emerged as a prominent figure in discussions with top health agency officials, including Dr. Mehmet Oz, the head of Medicare and Medicaid. Mr. Khosla, whose son runs the healthcare AI company Curai Health, has long maintained that artificial intelligence will largely replace human physicians. Meanwhile, Chris Klomp, a nominee for the second-in-command position at the health department, described the adoption of patient-care AI as the ultimate goal for improving public health and lowering costs.

While doctors increasingly utilize AI for routine administrative duties, the prospect of autonomous algorithms managing direct patient diagnosis and treatment remains controversial. The rapid deployment highlights a broader tension between rapid technological innovation and the cautious regulatory standards typically required in modern medicine.
