The U.S. economy added 29,000 jobs in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. The unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.2 percent.

September’s gain follows a revised increase of 162,000 jobs in August. Employers had added 31,000 jobs in June and 21,000 in July, according to the BLS.

The new figures continue the pattern of modest monthly payroll changes seen throughout the summer, reflecting uneven hiring across sectors.
