Trump eases rules on dyed diesel to lower fuel prices

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order allowing the purchase of off-road dyed diesel by anyone for any reason. The directive aims to bring down high diesel prices for farmers, truckers, and other workers. Traditionally, farm vehicles, construction equipment, and other off-road machinery utilize red dye diesel, which is exempt from federal and state highway excise taxes. The fuel is identical to standard diesel but is dyed red so law enforcement can easily identify it. Trump’s order directs the Treasury secretary to defer federal taxes on the on-road use of dyed diesel through the end of the year and provides relief from penalties. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and industry groups praised the move as a crucial short-term measure to alleviate steep fuel costs during harvest season. However, energy experts note that while the policy offers temporary tax deferral and penalty relief through December 31, long-term savings and permanent forgiveness would require further legal authority or congressional action.
