President Donald Trump loomed large during a televised Iowa Senate debate Wednesday night between Democratic state Representative Josh Turek and Republican Representative Ashley Hinson, which took place as polls show the race in a dead heat. Turek targeted Hinson for backing Trump policies that he argued are driving up costs for Iowa families, citing issues ranging from tariffs to the conflict in Iran. Turek noted that Hinson voted multiple times against curtailing the war and reining in Trump’s tariffs, emphasizing that local residents are struggling to afford food, electricity, and fuel. Hinson fired back by accusing Turek of skipping legislative votes, adopting overly liberal positions, and misrepresenting her record. She also pointed to his changing stances on working with the former president. Despite the pointed exchanges, the matchup remained unusually civil. Both candidates expressed sympathy for personal hardships and pledged to collaborate with whichever administration takes office. The contenders debated a range of topics, including taxes, immigration, Social Security, and health care funding. Hinson criticized the Biden administration’s border record and credited Trump and Republicans for achieving zero crossings at the southern border. Turek countered that he would withhold funding from the Department of Homeland Security without significant enforcement reforms, including body cameras and revised use-of-force standards, while supporting pathways to legal citizenship. On fiscal policy, Turek proposed removing the income cap on Social Security taxes to ensure the program’s long-term solvency, arguing that wealthy individuals should contribute past the current threshold. Hinson countered that lifting the cap alone would be insufficient and suggested establishing a federal commission to revamp the system. The open Senate seat is one of several competitive races expected to determine control of the chamber following Senator Joni Ernst’s decision to step down.
