PEI oyster farmers face devastation from deadly parasites

Prince Edward Island oyster farmers are grappling with severe financial and emotional strain as two fatal parasites devastate local waters. Growers like Bruce and Kaila Richard report staggering mortality rates of 90 to 95 percent, pulling up millions of dead oysters after spending years investing in heavy equipment and loans. The diseases, known as MSX and dermo, were detected in P.E.I. waters in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Although harmless to humans, the parasites prove fatal to oysters, leaving many independent producers struggling to pay mounting debts. Provincial and federal authorities have introduced support measures, including financial relief, mental health resources, and approval to import disease-resistant seed. However, industry representatives note that growing new stock to market size takes at least three years, leaving a critical funding gap for farmers. Peter Warris of the P.E.I. Aquaculture Alliance warns that without basic income support, independent growers risk losing their livelihoods or selling out to larger corporations at fire-sale prices. Wild oyster fishers face similar hardships, prompting federal license buyback programs that local associations argue fall short of comprehensive recovery needs. Despite the overwhelming uncertainty and heavy tolls on mental health, many multigenerational farmers remain determined to protect their way of life on the water.
