Governor Gavin Newsom strongly rebuked President Trump after he suggested during a campaign rally in Nebraska that Iran could “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego. Addressing the crowd, Trump defended high costs and global tensions, stating, “It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.”
Responding to the remarks on the social media platform X, Newsom wrote, “After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego. He is deranged and dangerous.”
Los Angeles stands as the nation’s second-most populous city and holds critical infrastructure, including the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command Headquarters, major aerospace contractors like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman, and research institutions such as the RAND Corporation.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also criticized the statements on X, writing, “The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives.”
Similarly, San Diego, the eighth-largest city in the United States, hosts significant military installations in and around its borders. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria forcefully rejected the remarks, posting on X that “San Diego is not collateral damage. We are not expendable. And we are never a ‘small price to pay.’ Keep our city out of your reckless war talk.”
