The Canadian Army has enacted one of its most significant structural overhauls in decades, transitioning from geographically based divisions to units organized around specific missions. As part of this change ordered by Lt.-Gen. Michael Wright to modernize the force, a signing ceremony and parade were held at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton on Thursday to establish the 1st Canadian Division. Headquartered in Edmonton, this manoeuvre division integrates armor, artillery, light infantry, paratroopers, and engineers to prepare the army for rapid deployment, large-scale combat, and sustained operations. Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of the new division, emphasized that the shift aims to increase agility and lethality in response to a changing global threat environment reminiscent of large-scale conflicts like the one in Ukraine. Alongside this unit, a support division is being established in Kingston, Ontario, while a new defence of Canada division, designated the 2nd Canadian Division and consisting largely of part-time soldiers, will focus on domestic emergencies and national defense out of Montreal. Meanwhile, the historical 3rd Canadian Division is being retired to the supplementary Order of Battle, with its regular troops moving to the 1st Division, reserves and rangers going to the 2nd Division, and support personnel joining the support division. The newly activated 1st Canadian Division will oversee three Canadian Mechanized Brigade Groups located in Edmonton, Petawawa, and CFB Valcartier, as well as the 3rd Light Infantry Regiment, the Canadian Artillery Brigade, the 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade, and the 1 Canadian Sustainment Brigade.
