A 28-year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute in Shelekhov, Siberia, has died after developing severe pneumonia, with regional officials and reports pointing to a suspected pneumonic plague exposure. The employee, identified in regional reports as Darya Shipilova, was hospitalized on September 29 and passed away overnight between October 1 and October 2. Russia’s federal health oversight agency, Rospotrebnadzor, stated that the worker was diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown etiology, and noted that initial testing of patient samples did not recover microorganisms linked to her professional duties. Accounts surrounding the incident remain conflicting, with independent and regional outlets reporting that the technician may have accidentally broken a test tube containing live Yersinia pestis, while other versions suggested infection following travel. Rospotrebnadzor has disputed any laboratory accident involving pathogens and maintained that the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the region remains stable. Following the death, local health authorities placed nearly 200 contacts under medical observation, and several hospitals in Irkutsk implemented quarantine measures. Anna Popova, Russia’s chief sanitary officer and head of Rospotrebnadzor, traveled to Irkutsk for an emergency containment meeting with regional Governor Igor Kobzev. Meanwhile, international bodies are keeping a close watch on the situation, with the US State Department stating that it is monitoring developments alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and encouraging Russian authorities to share accurate information openly.
