He also vowed to work alongside President Trump to defend the steel industry in the Steel Valley. McCormick subsequently praised Fetterman on stage for his friendship and courage. Last year, President Trump cleared the way for Japan-based Nippon Steel to acquire U.S. Steel after securing an agreement ensuring billions in investments and a federal golden share. Fetterman has frequently broken ranks with fellow Democrats, supporting Trump’s Iran strategy, diverging during last year’s government shutdown, and becoming the first Senate Democrat to meet Trump at his Palm Beach home following the 2024 election. While Fetterman has denied plans to change parties, noting in a May op-ed that he would make a poor Republican given his heavy alignment with Democrats, he drew a red line regarding the Democratic Party potentially becoming anti-Israel. Should Fetterman ever switch parties, it would further complicate Democratic efforts to reclaim the Senate majority, as they need to flip four seats in November.
