North Texas officials report that the Ross Fire, which ignited near Ross in Palo Pinto County on August 24, has scorched a minimum of 90,400 acres across Palo Pinto and Jack counties and reached 65% containment by Wednesday, September 9. Recognized by the National Weather Service as the second-largest wildfire in North Texas, the blaze has destroyed 157 structures, damaged 140 others, and spared 453 structures. The fire forced evacuations in Jack County on August 25, though they were lifted the following day, and impacted local school schedules before normal operations resumed. Organizations including the Texas A&M Forest Service and the TIFMAS Strike Team are actively battling the blaze with aircraft and dozers, while local shelters assist displaced livestock and pets amid elevated wildfire conditions caused by dry vegetation and gusty winds.
