Saudi Arabia has shut down its vital East-West oil pipeline following drone strikes originating from Iraq, intensifying global energy concerns as Iran-backed Houthi rebels make significant territorial gains in Yemen. The 745-mile pipeline had allowed the world’s leading crude exporter to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced blockades following military conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. The Saudi Energy Ministry confirmed the shutdown on Friday after injuries were reported, while Iraq dismissed a military commander linked to the drone launches and closed two border crossings with Iran. Meanwhile, Houthi forces captured the strategic Red Sea island of Perim and the port city of Mocha, threatening maritime trade routes. U.S. President Donald Trump noted that the Houthis reached out to express a desire to avoid conflict with the United States, even as oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel. The United Nations reported that at least 46,000 people have been displaced in Yemen due to the renewed fighting.
