The venture capital firm associated with Donald Trump Jr., 1789 Capital, strongly pushed back on Tuesday against allegations of potential political insider influence raised by a prominent House Democrat. Attorneys for the firm criticized the inquiry as political gamesmanship and declined to hand over requested confidential records. Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, initiated an investigation last month into the firm over its investments in several companies prior to receiving federal funding or policy actions, including Polymarket, Juul, Anduril Industries, and Vulcan. While Raskin’s inquiry sought portfolio details, due diligence documents, and administration communications, minority Democrats lack subpoena authority ahead of the November midterms. Counsel for 1789 Capital dismissed the claims as unsubstantiated and noted that Vulcan had received federal contracts prior to the firm’s investment. A congressional staffer responded by calling the firm’s reply evasive, while the exchange highlights potential aggressive oversight battles should Democrats capture House control.
