A longtime chef at Nobu Malibu was tragically killed early Saturday morning when a vehicle crashed into his parked car along the Pacific Coast Highway. The victim was identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office as 51-year-old Ryo Uchimiya. According to authorities, Uchimiya had arrived at work early for his shift and was resting inside his vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road when the collision occurred. Investigators stated that a 16-year-old boy driving a gray Range Rover SUV was traveling eastbound on the highway when the vehicle veered off and struck Uchimiya’s car. The impact pushed the chef’s vehicle into another car parked in front of it. Uchimiya was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries. Law enforcement officials noted that the teenage driver remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. Preliminary findings indicate that drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash, though authorities believe the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed. The devastating incident remains under active investigation by local law enforcement. Colleagues and community members have since shared emotional tributes for Uchimiya, who was a dedicated sushi chef and a foundational member of the restaurant’s staff for 25 years.
