House Poll Shows Democrats Lead as Voters Worry About Prices

According to a CBS News Battleground Tracker poll, Democrats maintain a national vote preference advantage and lead for a narrow majority of House seats as the midterm elections approach. This edge is largely propelled by voter dissatisfaction with the economy, concerns over rising prices, and a Republican base showing lower enthusiasm for turnout. Conducted between September 30 and October 2, 2026, the survey encompassed a nationally representative sample of 2,166 U.S. adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. While macroeconomic metrics fluctuate, most Americans rely strictly on everyday prices for groceries, food, and gas to measure economic health. A majority of voters attribute rising grocery costs directly to the Trump administration’s policies, while attributing increasing gas prices to the ongoing Iran war. Furthermore, many feel the administration has not concentrated enough effort on lowering living costs. These economic frustrations have alienated a segment of the Republican base termed ‘Reluctant Republicans.’ Registered Republicans who feel the administration ignores cost-of-living issues, whose candidates avoid the subject, or who disapprove of Donald Trump’s second-term performance compared to his first, are significantly less likely to state they will definitely vote. Consequently, Democrats continue to capture support from voters facing severe financial hardships. The survey also highlights shifting dynamics among Hispanic voters. On balance, the proportion of Hispanic likely voters backing Republicans sits lower than Donald Trump’s support in the 2024 presidential election. Alongside the economy and inflation, immigration and deportation policies weigh heavily on Hispanic voters, with many expressing concern over the scale of deportations and perceived unfairness in Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. Beyond the economy, candidate positioning on specific issues is shifting voter alignment. More voters favor candidates who oppose new tariffs and those who support restricting artificial intelligence development and data centers, sentiment that heavily favors Democrats. Conversely, the issue of transgender athletes competing on teams matching their birth sex breaks notably toward Republican candidates. Additionally, public desire for an end to the Iran conflict aligns with candidate critiques of the war, which many voters connect directly to elevated fuel prices. Ultimately, the CBS News and YouGov statistical model indicates that while Democrats retain their edge, congressional majorities remain fluid as campaigns enter their final phases.
