One person died and three others remained missing in the San Francisco Bay after a boat carrying 20 people sank near Alcatraz Island. The San Francisco Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to an afternoon emergency call regarding a vessel in distress between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen stated that a police marine unit arrived first, pulled a man from the water who was in severe distress, and performed CPR before taking him to Gashouse Cove, where he was pronounced dead. While initial reports indicated 19 occupants, witness accounts confirmed 20 people were on board the 50-foot cabin cruiser named Volare, which was based out of Stockton. Thirteen passengers were safely brought to shore, while three were transported to a hospital in stable condition, primarily suffering from impact injuries sustained after jumping into the water. Emergency crews deployed 11 vessels to search for the three missing individuals, continuing their efforts through the night. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie emphasized that responders conducted an all-hands-on-deck search and rescue operation. Authorities noted that all occupants were adults, largely consisting of family members participating in a memorial service at sea. Officials established a family reunification center at Fort Mason to support the survivors, while investigators worked to determine the precise cause of the tragedy.
