Patel has consistently defended his security-related travel as official business and recently filed a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over reports concerning his drinking habits and absences from headquarters. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has heavily promoted recent FBI statistics showing a significant decline in violent crime and a sharp drop in the murder rate across the United States. While the administration attributes these decreases to its hardline law enforcement strategies, independent experts emphasize that crime rates have been on a multi-year downward trend since the COVID-19 pandemic across various cities with differing political leadership.
