Christa Pike, the sole woman on Tennessee’s death row, survived a botched execution attempt on Wednesday night after being administered two doses of lethal drugs in Nashville. Pike, 50, remained alive following the procedure and was subsequently transported to an off-site hospital to receive life-saving medical care. Her legal team confirmed she was in critical condition, though her exact prognosis remained unclear. The execution proceeded after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a temporary federal court stay earlier that evening. Following the failed procedure, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee suspended all scheduled executions in the state for the remainder of the year and ordered a comprehensive, independent third-party review to investigate the incident. Pike was originally condemned to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. At the time of her 1996 sentencing at age 20, she was the youngest woman sentenced to death in the United States during the modern capital punishment era. State officials stated that standard protocols were followed during the procedure, while attorneys for Pike condemned the operation as cruel and entirely predictable given prior legal warnings regarding vein access and protocol concerns.
