Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences permanently closed its public museum doors at the end of September 2026, just short of its landmark 200th anniversary. Open to the public since 1828, the renowned institution struggled with visitorship that never fully recovered following the pandemic, alongside escalating operating expenses that rendered its traditional model unsustainable. Leadership noted that the difficult decision was made to safeguard the organization’s core scientific research and extensive collections. While the physical galleries and public display areas have shut down, the Academy’s vast collection of more than 19 million specimens and its critical research division will remain intact within the main Parkway building under the stewardship of Drexel University. The closure impacted roughly 27 employees and prompted an outpouring of grief from local families, scientists, and communities who viewed the historic museum as an irreplaceable educational cornerstone.
