Tesla has added a feature that lets drivers leave while their vehicles are charging in order to enable a quick escape during emergencies. The change responds to a mass shooting at a Supercharger location in Twin Falls, Idaho, in August that left seven people wounded and four dead.
Normally, when a Tesla vehicle is charging the plug is locked to the charging port and driving is disabled; to put the car in drive the charging cable has to be manually released from the vehicle’s charging port.
After the Twin Falls shooting, Tesla owners requested a quick-release mechanism that would allow them to escape if there is an emergency. This week, Tesla responded with a software update that implements a feature to address those concerns.
